1. Early editions of Monopoly games included no game tokens, but players were instructed to use household items as tokens. In 1935, the original six player tokens were introduced: the battleship, boot, cannon, thimble, top hat, and iron. Fan favourite Scottie the dog wasn’t added until 1950!

2. A standard MONOPOLY game includes a total of $20,580.

3. To speed up the game, MONOPOLY recommends following the official rules that dictate that if a player does not wish to buy a property they land on, the Banker should sell it at auction to the highest bidder. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price.

4. Another controversial rule is that, officially, a player landing on FREE PARKING does not receive any money collected via fines, or other rewards. 

5. On the flip side, Jail can still be quite lucrative. According to the official rules, even though you are in Jail, you may buy and sell property, buy and sell houses and hotels and collect rents.

6. Standard MONOPOLY games include 32 houses and 12 hotels.

7. The police officer in MONOPOLY is called Officer Edgar Mallory and the disgruntled looking prisoner is called “Jake the Jailbird”.

8. In MONOPOLY, there is no inflation. Values on the MONOPOLY gameboard are the same today as they were in 1935.

9. The original MONOPOLY game cost $2 to purchase.

10. MONOPOLY has 28 properties, and a total of 40 spaces.
